History of 'The Coach House' - Maentwrog - Vale of Ffestiniog

Cottages Wales, Rural Reatreats and Weekend Breaks

Coach House Holiday Cottages in Vale of Ffestinog, Snodonia 'The Coach House' was the origninal stables and coach house of the former Rectory of Ffestiniog which is set in the Vale of Ffestiniog in the heart of Snowdonia National Park.

The Rectory, known as 'The Mansion' in the original deeds, was built at a cost of £957 and was exhibited on 7th September 1826 by the Lord Bishop of Bangor - Henry William.

Between 1826 - 1891 four different Rectors lived at the Rectory: Rev. John Jones (1826 - 1851), Rev. David Edwards (1851 - 1861), Rev. Richard Killin (1861- 1881) and Rev. Cadwgan Powell Price (1881 - 1891).

By 1887 the Rectory needed extensive repairs and Rev. Cadwgan Price was able to exchange it with the Oakeley family of Plas Tan y Bwlch and owners of the Blaneau Ffestiniog Slate Mines, for their Dower House (Glan William) in Maentwrog - now known as the Old Rectory.

The Rectory remained the property of the Oakeley family, let to tenants until 1961. Upon the death of Mary Oakeley Inge in 1961 the estate was left to her cousin the Hon. John Russell, 27th Baron de Clifford. In 1962 due to extensive death duties Baron de Cifford put the whole Oakeley & Tan y Bwlch estates, including the former Rectory up for sale. The former Rectory, it's grounds and Coach House have remained in private ownership since that time.

Slap bang in the middle of Snowdonia this is the heart of the national park.
Rugged mountains on 3 sides and sandy beaches along the shore.
Slate from Blaenau was the cutting edge of lightweight, roofing technology –
grey gold. For years it came down by packhorse to the quays on the Afon
Dwyryd and was rowed out on the tide past Portmeirion to waiting ships.
